Do you ever want to kill your clients?
Do you sometimes think all your clients are insane? Did you laugh uncontrollably and nod your head when you saw the Oatmeal's "How a web design goes straight to hell" cartoon? Do you say "me too" when you read Clients from Hell? Have you ever seriously considered jacking in web design so you can do something less stressful like bomb disposal? If so, I want to hear from you.
Before starting MailRight, I was a "typical" web designer for over 12 years. I did websites for clients and often they were really good .. but from time to time I ended up wanting to punch my clients in the face. Repeatedly.
At first I just blamed it on the client, but it was happening too often for me to just blame it on some unreasonable @%$$hole fool.
I realized, like many web designers realise, that I had a problem managing client expectations. For example:
- I didn't expect to take telephone calls over the weekend. Some of my clients expected me to.
- I didn't expect to fix my clients' printers. Some of my clients obviously expected me to.
- I didn't expect the client's cat Tiddles to get involved in the design process. Neither my client nor Tiddles agreed.
- I wasn't expecting to have to do 72 different homepage designs. The client clearly didn't share my expecatations.
Basically, I realised that - while I wasn't a bad web designer - I was pretty poor at managing my clients' expectations.
We don't do web design for clients any more, but we've come up with really quite a good way to manage our email clients' expectations and I'd like to see if it would work for web designers and developers as well.
It certainly not something which any web designers I know of are doing.. so I thought it was at least worth trying!
I'm looking for...
Here's what I'm looking for:
- Talented web designers or developers who do good work but still sometimes have unhappy clients.
- Willing to let me help them try to fix it.
- To take part in a pilot scheme.
Interested?
